Cornejo (4-7, 4.44 ERA) lost five consecutive decisions before defeating the White Sox on July 10, when he allowed just seven hits in eight scoreless innings. The 23-year-old righthander improved to 3-3 with a 5.19 ERA in six career appearances against Chicago. Cornejo has posted a 4.80 ERA in 10 appearances on the road this season. The White Sox give the nod to Jon Garland, who is 3-2 with a 5.95 ERA in seven career starts against the Tigers. He lost to Detroit on July 8 despite allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings. Garland (6-7, 4.64) faced the Cleveland Indians on Saturday and allowed four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings but did not receive a decision. The 23-year-old righthander is 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA in eight starts at U.S. Cellular Field this season. Chicago has split the first two games of the series with Detroit after posting a 7-5 victory on Friday. Mark Buehrle won his sixth straight and Paul Konerko homered and drove in two runs for the White Sox, who have won three of their last four games. Carlos Lee had three RBI as Chicago jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on to improve to 22-24 against American League Central teams. Alex Sanchez had three hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who lost for just the second time in eight games against the White Sox this season.
