BAMAKO, Mali, July 23 (UPI) -- A senior German diplomat has arrived in Mali in an effort to secure freedom for 15 tourists -- 10 of whom are German nationals.

All were abducted five months ago in Algeria while taking a scenic tour of the Sahara.

The BBC said the diplomat, Juergen Chrobog, has held talks with Mali President Amadou Toumani Toure, seeking his help in finding the hostages.

German television reported last week that the tourists had been taken to northern Mali, but no group has claimed responsibility for the abductions. Algerian officials blame the rebel Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat for the abductions.
