| Japan's FamilyMart store chain to start US operations
TOKYO, Sept 14 (AFP) - FamilyMart Co. will soon become the first Japanese convenience store operator to open outlets in the United States, a news report said Sunday. The company plans to establish franchise chains around Los Angeles and along the east coast, including New York, setting up about 200 stores in each of the regions, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said, citing company sources. It also intends to set up distribution centers and food-processing plants in the United States to deliver goods to local outlets every day, the newspaper said. FamilyMart and its group firms will form a US unit that will use store management know-how that the group has acquired in Japan, it said. The company aims to build upscale stores in urban and exclusive residential areas to differentiate them from many existing convenience stores that double as gasoline stations, the newspaper said. The new stores will target areas where many Japanese and Japanese-Americans live, it added.
