| Founding father of modern vulcanology dies
PARIS, Oct 16 (AFP) - One of the pioneers of modern vulcanology, French scientist Jean-Louis Cheminee, has died of lung cancer at the age 66, the Paris Institute for Global Physics (IPGP), where he worked until his death, announced on Thursday. Cheminee's big contribution was to use sophisticated chemical analysis of lava flows and volcanic gas, which led to greater understanding about the internal structure of volcanoes. His many expeditions included a long Franco-American mission, from 1973-76, which exposed the volcanic chain that dots the subterranean ridges on the floors of the world's oceans. gse/ri/sjw Science-vulcanology
