Like FC Utrecht and NAC Breda, NEC were the third UEFA Cup contestants to lose last weekend (after a midweek UEFA Cup game). NEC had the better chances in the first half but only Dennis de Nooijer (his second of this campaign) found the net. His shot was deflected by ADO defender Van As. After the break the visitors got the better chances and scored twice, resulting in the first home defeat for NEC this season. On Saturday, they play at third ranked AZ Alkmaar. NEC's record at AZ is a bad one: only one win in 20 games scoring only 12 goals and conceding 45 goals. Last season the game ended in a goalless tie. They suffered three heavy defeats in all those years, 8-1 in 1978, 6-1 in 1980 and 5-0 in 2002. Only two doubts for Saturday, Pascal Heije and Frank Demouge. In midweek NEC lost at Polish League champions Wisla Krakw 2-1. Rob Wielaert scored from the penalty spot. They have a reasonable chance to reach the second round in the UEFA Cup.
