The moves are part of a restructuring plan that will continue through fiscal 2005. A public announcement is expected by Oct. 28.

The job cuts will be accomplished through buyouts and hiring restrictions.

Sony produces its Trinitron cathode-ray tubes in Inazawa, Aichi Prefecture, and Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture, in Japan.

The cathode ray tubes are being replaced by liquid crystal displays and ultra thin televisions, but the workers at the two plants may be able to remain if the plants are switched over to television assembling.
