VILNIUS, Sept 4 (AFP) - A Lithuanian court rejected on Thursday a bail appeal from French rock singer Bertrand Cantat, who is under criminal investigation for the death of French actress Marie Trintignant last month.

"The court decided to reject our appeal and left the decision of lower court unchanged," Cantat's lawyer Virginijus Papirtis told AFP.

Cantat was taken into custody after a violent row with the actress in their Vilnius hotel at the end of July left Trintignant in a coma.

She died on August 1 in Paris, to where she had been flown for treatment.

An autopsy showed Trintignant, 41, died to blows from the face, according a lawyer for her family.

Cantat, the 39-year-old lead singer of the French rock band Noir Desir, has claimed that Trintignant fell during an argument and cracked her head on the floor.

Cantat faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on murder charges in Lithuania.

He has also been formally placed under criminal investigation as part of a probe under way in France accusing him of violence unintentionally leading to the death of Trintignant.

Lithuanian prosecutors have said they plan to prosecute Cantat instead of allowing his extradition to face charges in France.
