Singapore shares close 0.33 percent higher / Singapore Stocks

SINGAPORE, Sept 4 (AFP) - Share prices in Singapore closed 0.33 percent up Thursday after gains on Wall Street, dealers said.

The Straits Times Index added 5.23 points to close at 1,610.23 and the All-Singapore Equities index was 1.15 points up at 437.47.

"People are just coming back again and buying with a vengeance after last week's lull," a dealer with a local brokerage said.

Volume traded totalled 1.23 billion shares worth 798.48 million Singapore dollars (456.27 million US), up from 1.01 billion shares worth 685.57 million dollars on Wednesday.

Rising issues stood at 175, decliners at 134 and 272 issues were steady.

On the gainers' list was Singapore Airlines which closed 10 cents up at 11. 60 and Singapore Press Holdings, also up by the same amount at 18.60.

But heavyweight stocks posted a mixed performance with United Overseas Bank up 20 cents at 12.90, DBS Group flat at 12.50 and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. 20 cents lower at 11.00.

Technology stocks were also mixed despite the firmer closing on Nasdaq.

Contract chip maker Chartered Semiconductor was one cent up at 1.18 but network systems integrator Datacraft Asia dropped two US cents to 1.08 US dollars.
