"The cooperation of Baltic countries in this area is quite good but we have no connection with the EU energy system," he added.

Lithuania is investigating a project which would link the country's energy grids to Poland in a bid to hook into the the EU's energy systems.

The scheme has been supported by European Commission president Romano Prodi but it is unsure whether its implemention will prove cost-effective.

Brazauskas was later to meet Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller and Latvian counterpart Einars Repse.

On Friday the five premiers will be joined by Loyola de Palcio, EU Commissioner for Energy and Transport and Italian Transport Minister Lunardi.
