SAN DIEGO, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Joan Kroc, who owned the San Diego Padres for six years in the 1980s, died Sunday of brain cancer at her home in Rancho Santa Fe. She was 75.

Kroc's husband, McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, bought the Padres in 1974 and owned the team until his death in 1984, when Joan took over.

After selling the Padres before the 1990 season, Joan Kroc became a philanthropist. She gave $100 million in 1998 to the Salvation Army for a recently opened community center and also gave $25 million to the University of San Diego.

"This is a sad day for the city of San Diego and the entire Padres organization," Padres owner John Moores said in a statement. "Mrs. Kroc was an important part of our history and a truly loved member of our family."

Kroc is survived by a daughter, four granddaughters and four great-granddaughters.
