| China police arrest three over subway tunnel collapse
SHANGHAI, Sept 22 (AFP) - Chinese officials said Monday they had arrested three men over the July 1 cave-in of subway line being built under the eastern metropolis of Shanghai, causing 150 million yuan (18 million US dollars) in damage. Li Zhuhe, local vice-manager of the Beijing China Coal Mine Engineering company, Li Guanqiang, chief supervisor of the Shanghai Metro Consultant Technology company and Yuan Qianghua, project manager of Shanghai Tunnel Engineering were charged with being "responsible for a severe accident," the Shanghai city government said in statement. An official investigation found that the three companies failed to react in time after equipment they were using to cool the tunnel broke down, the report said. The machinery was meant to freeze to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) the subway tunnel walls, helping to keep them firm as workers dug the line under the Huangpu river. Investigators said work should have been halted after the equipment failure, but Li Zhuhe reportedly told workers to keep digging. The accident caused no injuries but resulted in the collapse of several nearby buildings and other damage. The government did not say when the arrests took place or when a possible trial might begin. bms/bro China-accident-arrest
