| Patriots Star Quarterback and League MVP Wins 2003 NFL Alumni Golf Classic
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 2003--Former Boston Patriots quarterback Vito "Babe" Parilli, who led the Patriots to the 1963 AFL championship game, captained a five-man team that won the 2003 New England Chapter NFL Alumni Charity Golf Classic, held Monday, August 4, at Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover, Mass. Parilli teamed with fellow golfers Bill and Matt Glaess, John Curtain and John Kehoe to beat out a field of 35 other fivesomes captained by NFL Alumni who included Tim Fox, Russ Francis, Steve Grogan, Tom Matte and Stanley Morgan. The New England Chapter tournament was one of 25 tournaments to be held nationwide as part of the 2003 NFL Alumni Charity Golf Tour. By winning the New England Chapter tournament, Parilli and his team won an all-expense paid trip to the NFL Alumni's Super Bowl of Golf (SBOG) XXIV, to be held in spring 2004 at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla. Parilli's team will compete at SBOG XXIV for the mythic national championship against winning teams from each stop on the 2003 NFL Alumni Charity Golf Tour. Parilli's long and distinguished pro career began with the Green Bay Packers (1952-53, 1957-58) and went on to include stints with the Cleveland Browns (1956) and Oakland Raiders (1960). But it wasn't until Parilli joined the Boston Patriots in 1961 that he blossomed into a star. During his seven seasons in Boston, he set nearly every Patriots passing record and was voted to three AFL All-Star teams (1963-64, 1966). In 1964, Parilli was named AFL Most Valuable Player after leading the league with 3,465 passing yards and throwing a record 31 touchdowns. Parilli finished his career with the New York Jets (1968-69) and earned a championship ring backing up Joe Namath in Super Bowl III.
