BERLIN, Oct 5 (AFP) - Werder Bremen ousted VfB Stuttgart, and their record-breaking goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, from top spot in the German football league on Sunday with a 5-3 win against VfL Wolfsburg.

Stuttgart could only earn a goalless draw against bottom club Cologne on Saturday which left the way open for Bremen to jump over them into pole position.

Bayer Leverkusen also jumped over Stuttgart into second spot with a 3-0 victory over Hansa Rostock in the other Sunday game, leaving champions Bayern Munich in fourth position.

Bremen, whose Brazilian star Ailton scored twice, were only ahead by the slimmest of margins however.

Bremen and Leverkusen both had 19 points from eight matches and were equal on a goal difference of plus 12 but the club from the northern port took the lead on 21 goals scored as against Leverkusen's 18.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was delighted with his attack but at the same time could not help be disappointed by his leaky defence. "I'm very happy we scored five goals but I cannot understand at all how we let in three goals," Schaaf said.

Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs warned the team against complacency however and reminded them of their big fixture in a fortnight.

"That was a great performance and a good result for the team but that might pale into insignificance if we don't also win our home game against Stuttgart in two weeks," Allofs said.

The leading duo are one point ahead of Stuttgart and two in front of Bayern Munich who beat Hertha Berlin 4-1 on Saturday.

Apart from Ailton, who joined Rostock's Martin Max as the Bundesliga's joint top scorer with seven goals, French playmaker Johan Micoud scored his fourth goal of the season in the highest-scoring league fixture so far this term.

On Saturday, VfB Stuttgart keeper Hildebrand broke Oliver Kahn's mark of 802 minutes without conceding a goal to create a new German league record.

Stuttgart's 0-0 draw with Cologne was enough for the 24-year-old to create a new mark of 825 minutes without letting a goal in, during an otherwise uneventful match.

Coach Felix Magath will not have been happy with the point dropped against Cologne however as his team's form dipped following their surprise Champions League victory over Manchester United.

Stuttgart dominated Cologne but their strikers, particularly the young German international Kevin Kuranyi, proved ineffective in front of goal.

Bayern Munich's 4-1 victory over Hertha Berlin had both Michael Ballack and this season's new signing Roy Makaay both scoring.

Another result of note was 2001/02 Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund's first away success since last December in winning 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Giuseppe Reina found the net in the 10th minute and Matthias Sammer's side are now lurking behind the leading pack in fifth spot, three points behind Bremen.
