Gordano Strengthens Powerful Anti-Spam Controls

Adds More Features to GMS's Spam Defenses, Slashes Time Spent In Spam-Fighting

GMS Anti-Spam (AS) already uses artificial intelligence, content pattern recognition and flexible content filtering to block huge amounts of unsolicited commercial e-mail. Its AI function learns and adapts to mail movement patterns, and its filters and restricted word tools identify content patterns. To counter new assault strategies by spammers, Gordano has added even more sophisticated content and MIME filtering to GMS AS -- without sacrificing usability and simplicity.

"We looked at a large collection of spam and identified a number of tests to improve the effectiveness of the restricted words feature. These have all been integrated into our GMS Anti-Spam module and initial testing by our own team and beta-testers look very positive. We have had reports of over 90% spam reduction," said Simon Tyler, Director of Development at Gordano. "We have also made it easier for customers with a large number of domains to manage the software by allowing a single restricted word list to be used across all domains. Installation is automatic and configuration is as simple as clicking a few checkboxes."

New features include even more powerful content filters using word-based restrictions including intelligent word recognition, case sensitive checks, translation of HTML entities and checking of both raw and filtered HTML. An additional option of blocking attachments by MIME content type has also been added.

-- Intelligent word recognition. A large amount of spam

substitutes one character for another in an attempt to fool

word based filters. Examples would be to replace a with @, I

with 1 or l, and so on. GMS AS is aware of these tricks and

able to replace the correct letter for the purposes of

checking the content for banned words or phrases.

-- Filtered and Raw HTML. Checks are now run against raw messages

so that content contained within HTML tags such as URL's may

be filtered, and again with all HTML tags stripped out of the

text in order to catch words that have been split by invalid

HTML tags in a bid to prevent detection.

-- Case sensitive checks. To allow for greater flexibility,

checks can be case sensitive, i.e. "This Phrase" is not the

same as "this phrase".

-- Translation of HTML Entities. An HTML entity such as '&#038'

or '&' will be correctly translated to '&' prior to

checking.

-- MIME content type blocking. GMS AS can block messages

containing given MIME Content Types. For example, all word

documents can be blocked regardless of the extension of that

document.

In addition to GMS AS server-side filtering, Gordano's GMS WebMail Express now contains client-side, user-configurable content filtering options. The Confirmation process, Anti-spam filter and Block List options now give GMS WebMail Express users additional high levels of spam protection. This feature benefits both individual clients and ISPs offering hosted services.
