| Hansen's world champs hopes brought to heel
LONDON, Aug 5 (AFP) - Britain's European and Commonwealth triple-jump champion Ashia Hansen has pulled out of the World Championships in Paris later this month after being advised she risked seriously damaging her Achilles tendon. The 31-year-old American-born athlete underwent surgery on the heel in March after winning gold at the world indoor championships but has since been unable to compete outdoors. Hansen, whose best performance at the world outdoors in four attempts was fifth in 1997, said she would now replan her training programme in a bid to peak at next year's Olympics in Athens. "It was an incredibly difficult decision but now that I have made it I feel relieved, and can focus all my efforts on returning to peak condition in preparation for the Olympics next year," said Hansen, who also took gold in the 1999 world indoors and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. am/pi03 Athletics-World-GBR-Hansen
