LinuxWorld San Francisco 2003 Makes Case for Linux as Collaboration of World's Great Thinkers BizVantage A Net clipping service that learns what you need: for business, investment or technology. SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 2003--When thousands of customers, developers and vendors converge on LinuxWorld next week, they will be the first to see a new Linux ad being previewed there by IBM. The new advertisement will air on television in early September. The ad, which was developed by Ogilvy & Mather Inc., features a young boy being observed by scientists as he is educated by icons or experts from particular fields. The boy is a metaphor for Linux, and the educators are a metaphor for the many experts who have contributed to making Linux the fastest growing server operating system in the industry and the world's most popular open source software. The educators are a mixture of well known celebrities and actors posing as professionals from various fields. They represent a broad range of skills that help to further educate the child including a poet, a Latin scholar, a soccer player, an architect, a plumber, a musician, a pilot, a corporate officer, an astronomer, and an anthropologist. The celebrities featured include: Henry Lewis Gates, Harvard University professor, author and leader in the African American community, who articulates his views around community-based sharing of information and ideas. John Wooden, former UCLA Bruins basketball coach for 23 years, including ten when the team won the NCAA championship, who makes the point that success depends on building a great team versus individual great players. Sylvia Nasar, author of "A Beautiful Mind" and economist, who airs her views about the nature of the economy - where a small breakthough can solve an incredibly complex problem, especially when people learn from each others' mistakes. Penny Marshall, actor and director, known as a director who understands that timing is everything, suggesting that now is the right time for Linux. Muhammad Ali, boxer and Civil Rights activist, because of his tenacity and willingness to take on big battles. "We know that Linux is a breakthrough technology, not only because it is based on open standards, but because it is built by a community of technologists who include some of the world's most talented programmers," said Abby Kohnstamm, IBM senior vice president of marketing. "This advertisement is intended to highlight IBM's steadfast commitment to Linux as representing the best in industry collaboration and innovation." The advertisement is aimed at a broad audience, both business and IT. Its intent is to highlight IBM's support of open standards and to fuel the growing momentum behind Linux.
