| Bomb-hit Jakarta hotel is part of US-run chain
WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (AFP) - The US-run luxury Marriott hotel in Jakarta, where a car bomb killed at least 13 people and left about 150 injured Tuesday, is part of one of the world's largest hotel groups. The five-star JW Marriott opened in September 2001 in a newly developed commercial district south of the city centre, one of 2,600 hotels owned or franchised by the company across the globe. Marriott International, which has its headquarters in Washington, employs about 129,000 people in hotels in 66 countries. Last year, its 75th anniversary, the company reported net income last year of 277 million dollars on revenue of more than eight billion dollars, but earnings for the second quarter of 2003 were down largely because of the Iraq war. Another Marriott hotel situated on the 40th floor of the World Trade Centre was devastated in the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington in 2001, but its employees and guests managed to escape. Marriott had announced in June that it planned to build 10 more hotels in Asia over the next 18 months to add to the 70 existing establishments in the region. mb/sbo/txw Indonesia-blast-hotel-company-Marriott
