TORRANCE, California, Nov 21 (AFP) - Kansas City Wizards veteran midfielder Preki became Major League Soccer's first two-time Most Valuable Player on Friday, capturing the award six years after collecting his initial one.

Preki, who at 40 also became the oldest MVP in US professional sports history, had already captured the year's scoring championship with 12 goals, as well as points awarded for 17 "assists" in creating goals.

"Ten months ago there was no way I was thinking that I would be here standing in front of all you guys accepting this great award," Preki said.

Each of the last three scoring champions in the US football league and five of eight all time have been named MVP.

Preki is known for his trademark cutback moves and accurate left foot. He is the only scoring champion to finish with more assists than goals scored, a feat he has accomplished twice.

Preki finished six points ahead of his nearest competitor, Los Angeles Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz, who accumulated 35 points with 15 goals and five assists.

Chicago Fire forward Ante Razov and New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman finished one point behind Ruiz.

Preki helped guide the Wizards to a second-place finish in the Western Conference and into the postseason for a fourth consecutive season.
