DHAKA, Aug 5 (AFP) - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is to provide a 16.3 million-dollar loan to Bangladesh for micro-finance aimed at landless women, officials said Tuesday.

The fund hopes the seven-year project, which begins this year, will improve the livelihood and food security of the rural poor by providing income as well employment opportunities, the official BSS news agency quoted IFAD sources as saying.

The project will cover 13 districts with a population of 20.85 million people, with landless women being the target group, the sources said.

About 80 percent of the total budget will go directly to the beneficiaries, either as credit or in the form of training.

The credit will be accessible through 11,700 new savings and credit groups that will be created through the project.

The sources said IFAD's experience had shown investment in livestock accounts for up to 40 per cent of all micro-credit.

Livestock represents an especially good investment for the landless poor, in particular for women who have the major responsibility for livestock production.

The local agency taking the lead in implementing the project, the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation, founded by the government in 1990, is one of the world's best examples of an autonomous micro-credit apex institution, BSS said.
