LUANDA, Oct 2 (AFP) - Travellers using the road linking the Angolan capital Luanda with the province of Malanje in the east of the country face attacks by gangs of armed youths, according to local press reports Thursday.

The most dangerous stretch of the 400 kilometre (240 mile) road is reported to be the 30 kilometre (18 mile) section between the small town of Cacusso and Malanje, capital of the province bearing the same name.

The government daily Jornal de Angola quoted witnesses who reported three vehicles had been attacked last weekend and those travelling in them had had their property stolen.

In June dozens of people were killed or injured in armed attacks in the area between Luanda and Malanje, a rural province which was among those hardest hit by the 27 year civil war which ended in 2002.
