PARIS, July 9 (AFP) - The Paris haute couture shows, when designers from across the globe present their autumn-winter 2003-04 collections, take place this week until Thursday. The following are briefs from the fashion world:

Could Nicole Kidman be the next face of Chanel?

PARIS: Following his couture presentation for Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld refused to confirm reports that Oscar-winning Australian actress Nicole Kidman will be the next face of the venerable French fashion house.

"It's not a done deal, so I can't tell you anything," the German designer told reporters, although he admitted that he would love to have Kidman by his side, noting: "She's the best of the best."

Lagerfeld also would not comment on reports that Kidman's contract with Chanel could total a minimum of seven million euros (7.9 million dollars) -- a record sum.

"I'm not responsible for Chanel's accounting," he said.

Kidman, 36, won the best actress Oscar in March for her portrayal of British author Virginia Woolf in "The Hours", a role for which she donned a prosthetic nose and dyed her hair, making the glamourous star barely recognizable.

US designer Rick Owens revives Revillon fur label

PARIS: The world's oldest fur house, Revillon, created in 1723, burst into the 21st century earlier this week thank to US designer Rick Owens, a master of deconstruction whose work has thrilled runway mavens for several years.

Owens applied his technique to the house's trade, with minks and other furs seemingly going through a shredder. Long ribbon-like mink pelts and feathers that obscured the silhouette were worn over torn tank tops, shorts and jeans.

Other mink coats were cut on the bias, creating a fluid line over a sumptuous perfecto. A discreet full blouson-style jacket was elegantly paired with a long fitted knit skirt.

Fortuantely for Owens, animal rights activists who object to the use of fur in the fashion industry and have disrupted catwalk shows in the past were nowhere to be seen.

Romance from Loulou de la Falaise

PARIS: Loulou de la Falaise, former muse of Yves Saint Laurent and onetime director of YSL's accessories and jewelry line, this week unveiled her first ready-to-wear collection for autumn-winter 2003-04 at her Paris boutique.

"I want to bring a bit of romance and poetry to fashion, and offer lines that have a true spirit," de la Falaise told AFP.

Result: elegant and brightly colored separates made in luxurious fabrics with "couture" detailing, like Scottish tartan trousers under a fox cape.

"It's very beautiful. There are so many ideas and flashes of inspiration. I'm not at all surprised," said the 67-year-old Saint Laurent.
