PERALADA, Spain, July 26 (AFP) - German actress Hanna Schygulla will give Spain's Peralada Festival a flavour of Argentina Sunday when she performs "Borges y yo" (Borges and I), a series of tales paying homage to the tango.

Pianist Peter Ludwig and cellist Peter Wopke will accompany Schygulla for the work directed by Alicia Bustamante as the German switches roles for the weekend, being better known for portraying characters such as Lili Marlene.

Ludwig will also perform several traditional Argentine compositions such as "El choclo" (literally an ear of corn), bringing to bear the full range of his understanding of the Argentine musical soul based on two decades spent in the country studying in Buenos Aires.

Polish-born Schygulla, 59 and a close associate of the late German cinematographer Rainer Werner Fassbinder, will further interpret "Volver" (return) and "El dia que me quieras" (the day you want me), by Alfredo Le Pera and Carlos Gardel, as well as Ludwig's own "Tango Malade" and "Lisboa".

Schygulla, who describes herself as an actress who sings, shone in a previous redition of Ludwig's work last April in Munich, receiving critical acclaim.

Peralada's International Music Festival is held in a small medieval town possessing a stunning castle and renaissance period palace, the venue sitting snug between the Catalan town of Figueres and the Costa Brava.

The 17th edition of the gathering comes to a close on August 20 with a performance of Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Roger Epple and featuring the orchestra of Germany's Halle opera.
