VALLETTA, Nov 15 (AFP) - Some 11,700 Maltese people established a world record for the biggest human rainbow on the tiny Mediterranean archipelago Saturday, breaking a Chinese record set last year, officials said.

The crowd assembled at a large square used for political meetings outside the capital Valletta, breaking the record by mid-afternoon, according to the rules established by the Guiness Book of Records.

Each participant wore a colour of the rainbow, paying five Maltese pounds (12.50 euros), which was to go to local charities.

Those taking part included Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami and opposition leaders who each wore their party colours before exchanging shirts soccer-style at the end of the event.
