QUANTICO, Virginia, Sept 10 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush on Wednesday urged lawmakers to clear "unreasonable obstacles" to battling terrorism, asking them to extend capital punishment a wider range of offenses.

"Untie the hands of our law enforcement officials so they can fight and win the war against terror," he urged lawmakers in a speech to officials here at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) base.

Bush said that some crimes that result in death, including sexual abuse and some drug-related offenses, carry the death penalty, but that some deadly terrorist attacks do not.

"Sabotaging a defense installation or a nuclear facility in a way that takes innocent life does not carry the federal death penalty. This kind of technicality should never protect terrorists from the ultimate justice," he said.

The US leader also pushed the US Congress to deny bail to suspects in terrorism-related crimes. Currently, they may be eligible for bail, enabling them to flee the country before trial, he said.

And he called for the government to have wider subpoena powers in terrorism related cases, saying that the authorities already have such powers when confronting alleged health care fraud.
