Japanese authorities say at least eight people have been injured in a powerful earthquake that rattled Japan's northern island Hokkaido.
Experts measured the quake, that hit early Monday local time, at magnitude 7.1. It was centered off Hokkaido's Pacific coast, near a sparsely-populated area of the island. No damage from tthe temblor was immediately reported.

National broadcaster NHK reported that the worst of the injuries was an 80-year-old man who broke ribs in a fall. Hundreds of homes temporarily lost power after the quake.
Last month, a 6.8-magnitude quake hit Japan's Niigata region, killing 40 people.
