A published report says a Pakistani computer expert whose arrest revealed terrorist threats to U.S. financial institutions also communicated with operatives of the al-Qaida network planning to disrupt the upcoming presidential election.

The New York Times Sunday cites unidentified senior U.S. intelligence and counter-terrorism officials as saying information resulting from the arrest of Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan is helping them "unravel" al-Qaida threats to attack the United States this year.

The report says Mr. Khan is emerging as a central figure in a web of connections American officials say may refer to an al-Qaida group whose intentions were previously unknown.

The newspaper says it is not yet clear if people behind surveillance of certain buildings in the United States belong to the same group as those who may be planning an attack.

The Pakistani was arrested in July. August 1, U.S. officials elevated from yellow to orange the threat level against financial institutions in New York, northern New Jersey and Washington.
