English Premier League football (soccer) club Liverpool has announced that Gerard Houllier's six-year tenure as manager has come to an end. The Frenchman's departure was announced Monday and his replacement has not yet been named. Houllier's future was reportedly worked out in weekend talks. The club said it "parted company" with Houllier. It was not clear whether he was fired or resigned, but it was obvious he was pressured to go.

The 56-year-old manager took over in 1998 and has been under fire all season after the club failed to challenge Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for the Premier League title. Although Liverpool finished fourth to secure a spot in the Champions League qualifying round, the Reds finished 30 points behind league champion Arsenal and 15 behind third-place Manchester United.

Charlton's Alan Curbishley and Valencia's Rafael Benitez are the reported front-runners to replace Houllier, who had another year remaining on his contract. Despite winning five trophies in 2001 including the FA, League and UEFA Cups, Liverpool has not won the coveted domestic title since 1990. The last of its four European Champions Cup titles was in 1984.
