Schlesinger died at a New York City hospital Wednesday after suffering a heart attack at a Manhattan restaurant.

Schlesinger wrote dozens of books on American social and political history, including a chronicle of President John F. Kennedy's White House years. Schlesinger served as a special assistant to President Kennedy.
He also wrote a biography of Mr. Kennedy's younger brother, Robert. Schlesinger also wrote books about former U.S. presidents Andrew Jackson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. His writings earned him two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Book Awards.
Schesinger wrote statements for Mr. Roosevelt during World War II, and served as an intelligence analyst in the agency that was the forerunner to the CIA. His writings helped define post-war American liberal philosophy, which supported Mr. Roosevelt's New Deal policies while denouncing communism.
