South African President Thabo Mbeki has welcomed the decision of the country's former apartheid party to join the ruling African National Congress party.

Mr. Mbeki says the move by the New National Party will help reconciliation efforts following the end of the racist government 10 years ago.

The head of the New National Party, Marthinus van Schalkwyk has said he will join the ANC in coming weeks and has asked party members to do the same.

The party was known as the National Party when it took power in 1948 and passed laws imposing white rule in South Africa.
