Shortly afterwards, another five people were killed and seven wounded when a car bomb exploded in a market in the nearby Dora district.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military said nine more American service members were killed across Iraq Monday in bombings, combat operations, and a bold insurgent assault on a U.S. combat post north of Baghdad.
Military officials say two soldiers died and 17 others wounded when insurgents first detonated suicide car bombs and then fired on American troops pinned down in a former Iraqi police station in the town Tarmiyah.
Military officials say the well-coordinated attack is a change in tactics by insurgents who previously have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes.
Military officials have warned earlier that insurgents could strike in areas outside Baghdad while U.S. and Iraqi forces are focused on ending sectarian violence in the capital.
