The captain of France's national football team has decided to retire from international soccer, following his team's elimination in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2004 championships.

Marcel Desailly said Sunday the time has come for him to stop, because he is not playing as well as he used to. The 35-year-old Chelsea defender added that he can not run up and down the pitch as much as he used to.

Desailly's French squad won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He has a record 116 appearances for France in 11 years.

His only appearance at Euro 2004 came in the 2-2 draw with Croatia in the group stage. France lost to Greece 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
