On Thursday, hundreds of Fatah gunmen stormed a Hamas stronghold in Gaza City, the Islamic University. There were no confirmed reports of casualties, but flames were seen rising from parts of the campus.

A Fatah security official said seven Iranians were arrested at the university and that an eighth committed suicide. Hamas denied the claim.

The United States has alleged that Iran has tried to transfer money to Islamic militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

At least six people were killed and more than 50 wounded in earlier gunbattles, which erupted after militants of the ruling Islamic group Hamas ambushed a truck convoy protected by security forces of President Abbas.
