Freed Guantanamo Detainees Join Fight in Afghanistan

Pentagon officials say at least eight detainees who were freed from the Guantanamo Bay military prison later joined insurgent fighters in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Officials say several former detainees have been killed in shootouts with U.S. coalition forces.  One of the detention center's teenage detainees was recently recaptured with a group of Taleban fighters.

Another former inmate, Abdullah Mehsud, told Pakistani media that he successfully hid his identity during two years in U.S. custody.  He is now believed to be leading a militant group in northwestern Pakistan's tribal region, which claimed responsibility for the recent kidnapping of two Chinese engineers.

U.S. officials have released 202 Guantanamo Bay detainees since late 2002.  About 550 detainees remain at the military prison.
