With their party's popular support at under 15 percent in recent voter polls, the delegates at Saturday's Democratic Left Alliance's special convention chose the head of the party's parliamentary caucus, Krzysztof Janik. He was selected over party secretary-general Marek Dyduch.

Mr. Miller announced his resignation as leader last month, saying he needed to devote his attention to government matters and to preparations for joining the European Union on May first. He is pushing for an unpopular austerity program designed to meet EU demands on fiscal solvency.

The Reuters news service reports senior party officials at the convention criticized Mr. Miller's policies and leadership. Reuters says they told Mr. Miller he would have to convene an emergency party congress in May, after EU accession, to radically revamp the party.
