Lebedeva, the outdoor world champion, unleashed two world records on her way to setting a new mark in the triple jump . Her second leap covered 15.25 meters, nine centimeters longer than the old mark. Then in her sixth and final attempt the Russian finished with a total hop, skip, and jump of 15.36 meters.
Alleyne Francique won the men's 400 meters, earning Grenada its first ever world indoor gold medal. In the women's 400 meters, Natalya Nazarova of Russia defended her title by beating countrywoman Olesya Kasnomovets. Nazarova led from start to finish and completed the race in 50.19 seconds.
Defending champion Allen Johnson of the United States won the men's 60 meters hurdles title in a championship record of 7.36 seconds. Liu Xiang of China was second, and Maurice Wignall of Jamaica was third.
Bernard Lagat of Kenya won the men's 3,000 meters race by holding off rivals Rui Silva of Portugal and Markos Geneti of Ethiopia. Lagat took the gold medal in 7:56.34 minutes.

In the women's pole vault, Yelena Isinbayeva cleared 4.86 meters. American Stacy Dragila took the silver medal (4.81) while Svetlana Feofanova of Russia won the bronze (4.70).
