In the women's draw, 10th seed Dinara Safina beat American Laura Granville (6-1, 6-1). Safina plays Ai Sugiyama of Japan, a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus. China's Li Na advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tamira Paszek of Austria.
