Australia has come to the aid of the Iraqi Olympic team by flying it out of Baghdad to begin its journey to Athens for the Summer Games.

In a joint statement Sunday, Australian Defense Minister Robert Hill and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer announced a Royal Australian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft flew the 48 member team from Baghdad International Airport under tight security.

The team was flown to Amman, Jordan to meet connecting flights to Athens where the Games begin this Friday with the opening ceremony. The ministers said "Australia supports the Iraqi people in their quest for a brighter future." Iraq had only four athletes at the Sydney Olympics four years ago.
